HISTORY: Rhonda and Paul Granger were sensible people. They met at dentistry school, fell in love, and dated for five years before marrying (to be sure they were ready to be committed to each other in that way). They also proceeded to wait until they were stable in their marriage and had stable careers before finally deciding to have a child at the ages of twenty eight (Rhonda) and thirty (Paul). On September 19, 1979, they welcomed a baby girl into the world...a little girl whose name they had been debating on all forty weeks and three days of Rhonda's pregnancy. They wanted something unique, something with meaning and history, something to show off their own intelligence and the sort of brilliance they hoped for and expected of their own offspring. They looked through their favorite novels, into the very best plays, and even lists of their favorite authors, playwrights, and poets before finally agreeing upon Hermione. Hermione...from The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare and the princess of Sparta and the daughter of Helen of Troy.
Rhonda and Paul were loving parents. Rhonda, who had grown up in a rather large family, adapted a bit easier to raising a child than Paul, who had been an only child himself. Rhonda took a few years off from the practice to take care of Hermione her first few years of life. They wanted their daughter to be great and encouraged success and encouraged her to try out many things. They chose toys that were meant to and proven to help aid in strengthening particular talents, especially helping her learn to count and read from a young age. They read many parenting books and did not believe in physical punishment and opted more towards positive reinforcement. They never had to worry much about Hermione. While she suffered through the same "terrible twos" as most children she was, for the most part, well behaved. Her only downfall when it came to her parents was a belief of being right versus their being wrong and a certain bossiness that was hard to put down, even when it came to her parents.
Hermione did extraordinarily well in school and made straight As. While her intelligence was admired by her teachers, Hermione did not do well socially, the only "friends" she had being those who needed her help with their studies...and even at that age, not many really sought after a tutor. She was known to become very rude to anyone she thought was cheating off of her and would call them out in the middle of a test to the annoyance of her teachers and classmates. Hermione was always awarded at school functions with certificates of her perfect attendance and near-perfect grades. Her parents were always proud of her and at the end of each school year would buy her a present to celebrate her good work in school.
At the age of eleven, Hermione found out she was a witch. A worker form the Ministry of Magic came to her house and explained to Hermione's parents and Hermione all about magic and Hermione's acceptance into Hogwarts. Performing a few simple spells for the Muggles proved to the Grangers that it was no joke and was actually happening. The Ministry witch arranged to take the Grangers to Diagon Alley the next day, to learn how to trade Muggle money for Wizarding money and went shopping for her wand and her schoolbooks and robes and other necessary items. Immediately she set on reading all of her schoolbooks twice and even practiced a few spells successfully.
She was very excited by the prospect of attending Hogwarts and learning much more about the magical world. She boarded the Hogwarts Express shortly before her twelfth birthday and was Sorted into Gryffindor upon arrival, though the Sorting Hat considered placing her in Ravenclaw. Immediately, Hermione excelled in all of her classes and was eager to impress her teachers and help the others learn, though in a bossy sort of manner that turned people off to her. She took to Harry and Ron to keep them from getting into trouble, including following them while they were leaving Gryffindor Tower to duel Draco Malfoy. They were chased by Argus Filch to the third floor where they came face to face with a three headed dog belonging to Hagrid named Fluffy.
Hermione overheard Ron saying very mean things about her one day and spent all day in the bathroom crying. No one liked her, and she always knew it, but it was rare she actually heard people voice it out loud, especially people she thought she could like, such as Ron and Harry. A troll made its way into the bathroom she was in and Harry and Ron came to her rescue. When McGonagall, Snape, and Quirrell arrived Hermione covered for the boys by claiming she had gone after the troll because she thought she could handle it and that Ron and Harry had merely helped her escape. The three became very close after that.
During the first Quidditch match, Hermione set Snape's robes on fire because she thought he was jinxing Harry. When Hagrid procured a dragon egg that eventually hatched and was named Norbert and was discovered, Hermione helped Harry smuggle it out to be taken by Ron's brother Charlie. They were found and given detentions. Then when Harry believed that Voldemort would return for the Stone, Hermione and Ron helped him save it. They passed Fluffy and Hermione helped them through the Devil's snare and got through a life sized wizarding chess game with her friends and even uncovered a potions riddle for Harry. When Harry went on, Hermione did what she could to help Ron until help came. At the end of year feast, Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville were awarded extra points.
During her first summer away from Hogwarts, Hermione wrote to Harry and Ron, the former of which never even got his letters, that were intercepted by Dobby the house elf. Hermione and her parents accompanied Harry, Ron, her parents, and the Weasleys to Diagon Alley to shop for school supplies.
In her second year, Hermione (along with the majority of other female students) had a crush on their Defense professor Gildeory Lockhart. She scored high marks on his first exam which was mostly books about himself from his books. She also experienced prejudice for the first time this year when Draco Malfoy called her a "filthy little Mudblood" and Hagrid urged her not to think about it and reminded her that she was a very talented witch.
On Halloween she went with Harry and Ron to Nearly-Headless Nick's Death-Day Party. When they headed back upstairs Harry began hearing voices and they discovered Mrs. Norris was petrified and the walls vandalized. She began spending even more time in the library hoping to find information about the supposedly reopened Chamber of Secrets and even interrupted Professor Binns in History of Magic to question him about it (an action that was unheard of to her classmates, though they were all interested in the subject matter for once). When Harry came up with the idea that Draco Malfoy was the heir of Slytherin, Hermione went as far as to get a note from Lockhart to check out a potions book to learn how to make Polyjuice Potion. She stole ingredients from Snape's cupboard and illegally brewed the potion in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. They were hoping to impersonate other Slytherins to get a confession from Malfoy. Hermione was unable to join her friends, though, as the hair she thought belonged to Millicent Bulstrode was from her cat and ended up in the infirmary for weeks recovering. Harry and Ron were able to go through as Crabbe and Goyle and discovered that Malfoy was not the heir of Slytherin.
Months after her recovery, she made the connection to Harry hearing voices and being a Parselmouth and came to the conclusion that the creature attacking the students must be a basilisk and rushed to the library to continue her research. She was able to save her life by looking through a mirror and was only petrified instead of killed when facing the basilisk. She was petrified for the rest of the year and was disappointed to learn that as a treat at the end of the year, end of term exams were cancelled.
That summer Hermione went on vacation to France with her parents. She was jealous when she found out Ron and his family had gone to Egypt because of how fascinating she thought it would be to learn about the Ancient Egyptian wizardry. While visiting Diagon Alley to pick up her school supplies she met and adopted a half cat half kneazle named Crookshanks. Her new cat was always trying to chase Ron's rat Scabbers.
At the beginning of the school year, Hermione received a time-turner from McGonagall so that she could take more classes than the average student would be able to. At Christmas when Harry got a Firebolt, Hermione reported it to McGonagall because she believed it was sent by Sirius Black and could be dangerous and it caused a rift between the two friends. Hermione faced more problems when Crookshanks continued going after Scabbers and Ron got mad at her for it. She was hurt by it all, but stood strong by her beliefs and instead focused all of her attention on Buckbeak the hippogriff's case as he had a trial for attacking Draco Malfoy. She was upset at the thought of Buckbeak being executed and slapped Malfoy for insulting Hagrid.
Along with everything else, Hermione was very impressed with their new Defense teacher Remus Lupin and thought he was the best they had and she was even able to figure out he was a werewolf. She did not expose him because she believed he was a good teacher and didn't agree with prejudice against his kind. Divination was a class Hermione had no respect or patience for and she thought it was silly and she eventually dropped the subject.
On the day of Buckbeak's trial the trio went to comfort Hagrid and Hermione discovered Ron's lost rat. They witnessed Buckbeak's execution and before they could get back to the dormitory Scabber's bit Ron and ran away and they chased after him. While chasing Scabbers they were attacked by a black dog that pulled Ron into a tunnel beneath the Whomping Willow. Hermione and Harry followed and made their way into the Shrieking Shack. Sirius Black confronted them (he was the black dog, his Animagus form) and they were soon joined by Lupin who was acting strangely and Hermione outed him as a werewolf to her friends and he confirmed it. They claimed Sirius was framed for the murders he was accused of and he didn't betray Harry's parents, but it was Peter Pettigrew instead who had been hiding as Scabbers. She also cast Expelliarmus at Snape when he appeared and knocked him out and she was horrified with herself for attacking a teacher.
When they decided to turn Peter in they headed back to the castle but when the full moon appeared Lupin transformed and Sirius transformed to protect the group while Peter attacked Ron and escaped. She and Harry rushed to Sirius's aid when he seemed to be in trouble and Dementors descended upon them to capture Sirius and he fainted. Harry told Hermione to think of happy thoughts to produce the Patronus charm but they both failed only when Hermione passed out Harry was able to produce an incorporeal Patronus and he had to fight them alone. Harry and Hermione awoke in the hospital wing after being rescued by Snape. With vague instructions from Dumbledore, Hermione used her time turner to take herself and Harry back where they freed Buckbeak and saved Sirius. At the end of the year, Hermione returned her time-turner because it was too much trouble and she agreed to drop a few subjects instead.
The following summer Hermione spent a great deal of time at the Burrow sharing a room with Ginny and went to the Quidditch world cup with the Weasleys.========================================
